gyotaku privacy policy
Last updated: 10 October 2026
gyotaku is an app that makes the screenshots on your phone searchable by the text inside them. This policy covers the gyotaku app for Android (package name com.silifton.gyotaku), an unofficial community app developed by Zaman Sheikh.
The short version
gyotaku does not collect, transmit or share any personal data. Everything it does with your images happens on your phone.
What gyotaku reads
With your permission, gyotaku reads the images in the folders you turn on (screenshot folders to begin with). It recognises the text in them and stores that text, with the image's file path, date and size, in a search index.
Where that is kept
The search index is kept in the app's private storage on your phone. It is never sent anywhere. Uninstalling the app, or clearing its data, deletes it.
What leaves your phone
Nothing about you or your images.
The only network use is this: if you turn on the optional Bengali or Devanagari reader, gyotaku downloads the reader's model files from GitHub. That request contains no personal data, though GitHub, like any web server, sees the IP address the request comes from. See GitHub's own privacy statement for how it handles that.
What gyotaku does not do
- No account or sign in.
- No advertising.
- No analytics, crash reporting or tracking of any kind.
- No access to your contacts, location, microphone or camera.
- It never changes, moves or deletes your images.
Permissions
- Photos and images: to read the images in the folders you choose.
- Notifications: to show reading progress while the app is in the background.
- Run in the background (foreground service): to keep reading after you leave the app.
- Internet: only to download an optional reader, as described above.
Children
gyotaku does not collect data from anyone, including children.
Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be published at the same address with a new date.
